Dr. Bob's Bookshelf

Some "automobiles" really deserve the appellation "Motorcar." My two favorites certainly do; The DeLorean and The Duesenberg. These books celebrate "The Motorcar."

Check out these videos that feature the Duesenberg!

"The Nethercutt Collection. The Cars of San Sylmar" by Dennis Adler.

I visited the Nethercutt Museum and this book is a thorough look at the cars as well as the Music Room at San Sylmar. Not every one of the over 200 cars has been given Adler's photographic attention, but for those that have, the quality is outstanding. Visit the museum. If you can't, buy the book! About $35.

"The Art of the Automobile. The 100 Greatest Cars." by Dennis Adler.

This book promises to be a coffee table classic. With the Duesenberg  "Twenty Grand" on the cover and another  forward by Duesenberg owner Jay Leno, it is a sure winner. Under $35.

"Duesenberg." by Dennis Adler.

This book focuses exclusively on the Duesenberg and has a forward by Jay Leno, who knows Duesenbergs first-hand. Adler has done quite a lot of Duesenberg photography, some of it at Leno's garage. It will also serve as a pretty good resource book. It contains a listing by chassis number giving engine serial and original coachwork.

"Duesenberg Racecars & Passenger Cars Photo Archive" by Jon Bill.

This book features "Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum's" photos of Duesenbergs going back to the racecar days. About half the book shows Duesenberg race and record cars, the later half focuses on the passenger cars.  Pictures of the J-series are identified by chassis and engine number. Since the photos come from the ACD archives, they are in B&W.

"Illustrated Duesenberg Buyer's Guide" by Josh Malks.

This 1993 book is sadly out of print. The meat of the book is the listing, by coach builder, of many J Duesenbergs. Not every J-number is listed, but many noteworthy ones are. The pictures in this book generally show the bodywork as first delivered to the customer, before the swaps, modifications, and restorations that might confuse the engine/chassis/body history.

"Duesenberg - The Mightiest American Motor Car." by J.L. Elbert.

This scholarly book is the bible for anyone seriously tracing the provenance of a Duesenberg. I use it regularly! The original edition is well out of print, but can be found used. The updated 1975 edition is available from amazon.com
